Reely Informative

Tamar River Estuary Trips.

The Tamar River on the central northern coast of Tasmania, Spans 70km, between Launceston and the Low Head entrance to Bass Straight.

The Tamar River has grown a reputation as Australia's home of the notorious XXL King George Whiting. Fish in excess of 60cm and 1.5 Kilo are caught, however regular captures of kilo plus fish in excess of 50cm are abundant.

Liken'd to catching and dehooking an angry sausage dog is probably the best analogy.

The estuary is also in fact a listed Ray / Shark reserve and has produced many Snapper in excess of 18 to 20 lb although enigmatic.

The Tamar plays host to a myriad of fish, including king George Whiting, Blue spot Flathead, Trevally, Australian Salmon, Elephant fish, Leather jacket, Mackerel, Mullet, Taylor Garfish, large squid up to 3kg. A common sighting is penguins, at certain times of the year you will see Dolphins and Whales and Orca's inside the estuary. Note: Boat Launching sites will be at either Beauty Point Public Boat Ramp located at Flinders St Beauty Point 7270 opposite the Tamar Sea Rescue Shed or Kelso Public Boat Ramp located at 20 Kelso Jetty Road Kelso 7270. Pick ups welcome at other local pontoons on the Tamar.

Rubicon River Estuary Trips.

The tannin-stained water of the Rubicon River flows from Bass straight through Port Sorel heads inland toward the Frankfort Hwy, where it mixes with fresh water, this lovely stretch of water is lined with productive oyster lined banks and flats. Habitat around the flats, racks and snags, abundant with nippers, crab and sandworms regularly produces arguably the largest bream in Australia. Note: Boat launching will be at Port Sorel Public Boat Ramp

There is no commercial pressure on this species which makes them a very sustainable sought after sport fish with specimens often exceeding 50cm, they also have delicate tasty white flesh. Port Sorel plays host to a myriad of fish, including, Flathead, Snapper, King George Whiting, Trevally, Australian Salmon, Mullet Taylor, Squid and Garfish. This estuary is also a Shark and Ray reserve.
